Information Management
Process administration, technology and the required methodology to make sure that the organizations address business questions and take decisions based on relevant, comprehensive and timely information.
The use of Information Management solutions leads to a better decision-making process, which generates tangible results for organizations. Assuring results ensures the Return on Investment (ROI) regarding investments in this kind of solutions. Using IM solutions assures the leverage of investments in transactional infrastructure.
The use of Information Management (IM) is related to:
- Address business’ and users requirements. An IM solution not designed to answer business questions shall not be used. Every solution must be developed with is final use in mind, and must address the organization’s specific needs.
- Provide users with the proper tools. There are different types of users in every organization, some need summarized information, and others need details. Some want to see dashboards, and other require powerful tools to conduct non-structured analysis. It is necessary to give each user the set of tools they require to do their jobs.
- Make sure solutions performance is adequate. Solutions’ response times must be reasonable, based on how the end user will use them. If the user needs immediate answers, and the tools provided need several minutes processing each query, it's likely he/she will stop using it, and will search for alternatives to get the information he/she needs.
- Ensure the availability and quality of data. First of all, the information needed to make decisions or to answer business questions must be available and come from a valid and structured source. Otherwise, it is important to look for other options that allow the user to address its needs using organizations data. Once availability is assured, it is necessary to ensure that data, as well as its flow from the source to its last transformation is reliable and correct.
- Train the users to use the tools within a decision-making context. It is very different to train a user to access a tool and know its basics, than train him to use the tool within a decision-making context. It is necessary to make sure the users know how to use the tools to solve their business questions.
- Prepare the organization to manage the solution in a structured process of development and continuous improvement. It’s very different to develop Information Management solutions, compared with IT transactional solutions. Once delivered an IM solution, the user will keep asking for changes, improvements and new applications. Organizations which had succeeded implementing these solutions, have already structured the required processes and structures to effectively manage this process.
